Campaign Blight

Campaign season seems to last, well, forever. Not just the current presidential campaign, but local campaigns also.

As far as I can determine, there are 2 reasons for campaign yard signs:

  • Create name recognition
  • Demonstrate support of the candidate by the property owner

Shortly after last year’s fall elections I noticed dozens of campaign signs for Calvin Goings showing up on Schuster Parkway. He is running for Pierce County Executive, an election that was not scheduled until fall of this year. The guy was putting up signs a YEAR before the election.

Schuster Parkway is a somewhat scenic and these signs are an environmental blight. I even read an article in the Tacoma News Tribune about the fact that these signs were showing up so early. But apparently there is no law against violating common sense.

So the signs have worked. I certainly recognize his name. I know nothing about his campaign platform but I do know I will not vote for someone who creates such a visual nightmare.
