Sitting here in Western Washington we don’t always feel the impact of issues in other parts of the world. We see or hear the news but in most cases we say “that is terrible” and then move on.
This past weekend we had the privilege of hearing directly from those who are directly impacted by life changing struggles.
The Kampala Pentecostal Church started a ministry to take in children that were orphaned by AIDS and war in Uganda. They started Watoto, not as a traditional orphanage, but as a community based on villages with homes that include a mother and eight children, a number based on traditional Ugandan families. Each village has homes, a nursery school, a kindergarten, primary school, high school, vocational training center, water project, medical clinic and a multi-purpose hall for use as a church and as a community center. Many of the children go on to attend university and have become the new leadership base in Uganda
The children’s choir is an outreach program to let people around the world know about the devastation in Uganda and the promise of a better future made by leaders developed in the Watoto villages. We were fortunate to have the choir perform a concert at church on Saturday night and also to sing at all three services on Sunday morning.
Here is a video of the choir singing:
